If you have a Google Analytics account and have logged in lately, you’ve probably seen a but on banners, popups and even a countdown flashing at you. it’s a lot, but don’t worry – we can help.
So, the reason for these is simple: Univerasal Analytics is going to stop processing data June 30, 2023. If you haven’t setup GA4 – you should do that right now. Really – go do that or contact me for help.
If you’ve already setup GA4, you would expect to not get all these popups and messages…but you are wrong. We’re all seeing them, but here’s a breakdown of what they mean and how to get rid of them.
1. Setup GA4. That should help solve some thing, but all of my clients have GA4 so I don’t have any examples of this popup.
2. The Countdown can’t be defeated: When you log into Universal Analytics, you’ll see this IF your GA4 property isn’t directly connected to GA4. You can check this byu clicking “go to setup assistant” and see if you do indeed have GA2 setup and connected. Below is what you should see in your setup assistant, but I’m still getting the darn popup, so there’s not a clear way to get rid of this one.
3. The Top Banner telling you to Complete Your Setup: This is because you haven’t “completed” the 7 steps that google wants you to complete in your GA4 setup. I highly suggest you compete these steps, but you can also just mark complete and make the banner go away.
4. The GA4 Popup about Migrating from Universal Analytics: This one has been around for a while (at least since Google announced their automated migration in early 2023). However, this is asking if you want to migrate your UA to GA4. In most cases, I would say – NO, because I only see this in GA4 accounts that are already setup and I don’t want any of the UA junk to mess it up. Anywho, IF you have GA4 already setup, select No and type in “already setup ga4” to get rid of this popup. Then, you’ll want to go to you GA4 Setup tag in UA and deselect the automatic GA4 setup. This should keep the popups away about this at least.
