When someone reaches out to me for SEO help (or I’m prospecting or I find a new product/service I love or I’m curious about a company, etc.) I start looking over their google search results. Here’s what I’m looking for.  So, I always search for the company in Google (to start)…

And here are a few of the clues I’m looking for in the search results:

  • Do they have any paid search running on their brand name (and how sophisticated that execution is).  I’m looking for ad copy, site extensions, call outs, etc.
  • How competitive the brand name is – are there other ads or other companies that rank for this search term? This tells me how much or how little they might need to invest in SEO and Paid Search to move the needle.
  • Have they spent any time configuring their page titles and descriptions to fit into the allotted character limitations? This tells me if they’ve thought about SEO at all or if we’re starting from scratch.
  • Do multiple pages come up from their site? This tells me a little bit about how many pages are ranking on their site and what type of content they’re working with.
  • Do a site search (site: www.website.com) to see how many pages are indexed.  This also should show me any subdomains and gives me a general sense of how many pages you have on your site.
